Year 1958 – Elmendorf AFB, Alaska —
At ceremonies held in the base’s Talkeetna Theater March 28, 1958, Brig. Gen.
Kenneth H. Gibson, commander of Alaskan Air Command, dedicated the White Alice Communications System. In a phone call inaugurating the tropospheric forward
scatter, more commonly referred to as troposcatter communications system,
Secretary of the Interior Frederick Seaton noted the system’s significance in
“both the expansion of Alaska, and the defense of the North American
continent.”
